Importing Symbols

Video Transcript

In this video, I want to show you how to bring in a large list of stock symbols. The first thing I want you to know is that the stock symbol list is comma-separated, so if we type a list of symbols separated by commas, we can import that list very quickly. For example, I can just type in "AAP, MAY, DA, F," and as you see, I can put commas between each stock symbol. Then, as I bring them in, "TSLA," I hit Enter, and it adds all the symbols individually.

If I enter a symbol it doesn’t recognize, it will pop up the search symbol prompt. I can hit Cancel on that one, and it will continue importing the remaining symbols. This is a way of bringing in multiple symbols simultaneously.

Now, let’s go through another example. Let’s say we have a list of comma-separated symbols in a Notepad file. All we have to do is highlight them, hit Control + C to copy, go back into Track and Trade, and hit Control + V (as in "Victor" for paste), which pastes them in as a comma-separated list. We hit "Open Chart Symbol," and it will add them to our list. If there’s a symbol it doesn’t recognize, it will pop up the list. You can either hit Cancel, or double-click the one you want from the list, and it will add it.

Now, let’s look at a real-world example. That was Portfolio 1, so let’s go ahead and create Portfolio 2, and we’ll do a practical example. We’ll go to Yahoo Finance, for instance, and look at a list of stocks that they have in their earnings section. I’ll highlight this list of stocks from bottom to top, then hit Control + C to copy the entire list.

This action will grab some extra data that we don’t need, so to create a comma-delimited list, I’ll use Microsoft Excel (or Google Sheets if Excel isn’t available). I’ll place my cursor in the top-left corner and press Control + V to paste. It pastes everything, including the extra content we don’t want; we only need the list of symbols.

Next, I’ll highlight the first column from bottom to top, then hit Control + C to copy. Excel formats this selection into a comma-delimited list. Now, when I return to Track and Trade, I place my cursor in the symbols field, hit Control + V, and then select "Open Symbol." This action imports the entire list from Yahoo Finance.

That's how we can import a large number of symbols into individual portfolios in Track and Trade.
